Breaking the sound barrier
1. Using the data in the article for Thrust's first attempt; calculate the speed
of sound in mph and in m/s. Does this agree with standard values given
in textbooks?
2. When something travels faster than the speed of sound, it is said to break the sound barrier. What causes the sonic boom associated with this?
3. How and why would the speed of sound be affected by;
a) The high temperature of the desert?
b) The low humidity of the desert?
4. a) Try to arrange with your teacher to design an experiment to find the velocity of sound in a water and/or a solid metal rod.
b) How is the speed of sound related to the density of the medium?
